2022 Solvay Citizen Day : DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion)
Citizen Day is an annual Group-wide event designed to reinforce connections between employees with Solvay’s Purpose to ‘bond people, ideas, and elements to reinvent progress’. Each year, Citizen Day is dedicated to a specific topic that the Group strongly believes deserves global awareness and action.
The theme of Solvay Citizen Day in 2022 was 'Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I)', which involved a variety of activities focused on DE&I across 103 Solvay sites in 14 countries. These activities led to a financial contribution of 50,000 euros to local charities and organizations focused on DE&I.
Solvay Korea held a total of five events for 2022 Citizen Day, including DE&I lectures, Live Talks, KIMCHI sharing, Coal briquette delivery, and Inclusive workshop.
On November 10th, 2022, a DE&I lecture was held for Solvay employees in Korea. Prior to the lecture, a pre-survey was conducted to measure the employees' understanding of DE&I and the status of DE&I within the organization. During the lecture, Professor Moonjoo Kim from Ewha Womans University, where the Ewha-Solvay Research Center is located, was invited to speak and help the employees better understand the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and why these values are essential to an organization based on the results of the pre-survey.
On November 15th, 2022, Solvay held a Live Talk event where employees shared their sincere opinions on conflicts that arise between generations, and between employees and management, based on the pre-survey and questionnaire results. The event provided an opportunity to hear various opinions and perspectives on creating an inclusive organizational culture.
In 2022, Solvay once again held its annual Kimchi sharing event for the neighbors in Buk-ahyeon-dong. Unlike the past two years, where social distancing was enforced, this year Solvay Korea employees made 40 pots of Kimchi by stuffing the salted cabbage with kimchi fillings. Following last year's tradition, seven Solvay Korea employees and staff from the neighborhood center visited and delivered kimchi to 40 vulnerable households in the area, while also checking on their well-being. Going forward, Solvay Korea plans to continue this annual Kimchi sharing event each winter to bring warmth to our neighbors!
Coal briquette delivery
On January 27th, 2023, Solvay Korea organized a coal briquette delivery volunteer event. Thirteen Solvay Korea employees who had volunteered in advance delivered 1,000 coal briquettes to five households in the Gaemimaul area of Hongje-dong, Seodaemun-gu. Gaemimaul is a neighborhood located on a hill where many seniors reside and require a significant amount of coal briquettes. Thanks to the hard work of the Solvay employees, the activity was completed 30 minutes earlier than expected. The coal briquette volunteer event was successfully completed, providing warmth amidst the cold winter winds, with the hope that the coal delivered directly by Solvay employees can help the elderly enjoy a warmer winter.
In January and February of 2023, Solvay Korea held a workshop for managers on creating an inclusive work environment. 39 managers from Solvay Silica Gunsan plant and Ewha-Solvay R&I Center participated, sharing their ideas and insights on the relationship between DE&I and work, as well as the role of managers in creating an inclusive work environment that respects diversity and equity. The workshop aimed to serve as a stepping stone towards a more harmonious and mature organizational culture.
